Things To Remember When Training A Hunting Dog

Some hunters need the assistance of dogs to track down prey or retrieve it. You might wish to start training your hunting dog when it is around four six months old. This hunting dog training will start with the basic commands that a pet owner might want to teach his pet dog. So you are laying down the foundation of obedience, respect and trust between you and your dog. These are an essential part of training hunting dogs because they are usually left loose during hunting and they must learn to obey each command immediately.

Dog Training Reminders

There are some things that you should consider and remember when training hunting dogs. These are mainly for your safety and also that of your dog’s well being. In the course of you training, you might be tempted to use an electric collar to help you teach your dog to obey you. This method uses small electric shocks to rebuke your dog if you think that it is doing something wrong. There are advocates who swear that this way of training hunting dogs is humane and has no side effects while there are others who protest this method citing that it is similar to punishing the dog for wrongdoing.

Things to consider when training a hunting dog is that your dog must learn to listen to you and your commands, otherwise it will go on its own to hunt and no care if you are calling or not. Instilling this kind of obedience in your dog needs a lot of patience in your part.

Another thing to consider is the breed of your dog. Not all dog breeds are suitable as hunting dogs. You must consider what kind of hunting you primarily do and which breed is most suitable for this. Training a hunting dog which is not suitable or the kind of hunting you do will be frustrating in your part. There are water hunting dogs, tracking dogs and dogs that can dig after prey.

You might also benefit if you remember not to push your dog too much. Do not expect all dogs to be trained in the same rate and time. Training hunting dogs might take more time than other forms of training. Training a hunting dog can take several months especially if you need to bring the dog out on field occasionally to train it. Have patience regarding the length pf time you might need for training hunting dogs.
